iPhone 12 Display and Design

The new iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro will feature a 6.1-inch display similar to the iPhone 11 base model. The notch is still in place and is not going anywhere anytime soon. However, the iPhone 12 will have an OLED display instead of the LCD display which the iPhone 11 has.

iPhone 12 Mini is the newest entry Apple device that bears a 5.4-inch screen display. The “Mini” moniker is definitely not something new since Apple has the iPad Mini model and the Mac Mini model. The “Mini” model is designed for those who want to get their hands on the new iPhone 12 and prefer a smaller device to carry around. The display is also an OLED display hence making it practically just a smaller iPhone 12.

On the other hand, the most premium version – iPhone 12 Pro Max, will feature a 6.7-inch display. This is Apple’s largest phone currently. For instance, the previous iPhone 11 Pro Max features a 6.5-inch display.

Unlike the previous release, all the iPhone 12 series will now be using OLED displays which supports Super Retina XDR. That means all the screen on the iPhone 12 series will have double the amount of pixels than that of the iPhone 11 and is also brighter too.

The iPhone 12 models will also abandon the curved sides in return for a flat side ( pro models will feature a stainless steel side while the base models will see to an aluminum side ) – a reminiscent of the late iPhone 5 and last seen on the iPhone SE models. All the phones are IP68 rated which makes the iPhones dust-resistant and water-resistant. The front of the iPhone 12 series is protected by a new “Ceramic Shield” which is covering atop the screen which Apple claims to provides 4x more drop protection.

iPhone 12 Camera

For a few years now we saw Apple constantly putting more powerful cameras into their new flagships. So it definitely won’t come as a surprise when the iPhone 12 will comes with a better camera compared to the iPhone 11. So what’s the biggest update in the iPhone 12’s camera? Let us see!

The iPhone 12 and 12 Mini will continue to come with a dual-camera system. Similar to that on the iPhone 11, the dual rear camera consists of a 12MP wide camera and a 12MP ultra-wide shooter. The front camera is also a 12MP wide shooter. Apple claims that the Smart HDR3 tech on the iPhone 12 will perform 27% better low-light photography on top of the already performing well iPhone 11.

The iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max has a pretty similar Triple camera system, albeit with big improvements on the sensors. The iPhone 12 Pro will features a wider main camera lens which Apple claims to be able to provide 27% better low-light performance compared to the iPhone 11 Pro. Meanwhile, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is featuring a 47% bigger sensor compared to its predecessor. Apple claims the larger sensor will provide a whopping 87% better low-light performance.

The telephoto on the iPhone 12 Pro will features a 2X optical zoom and the iPhone 12 Pro Max will have a slightly higher value of 2.5X optical zoom.

The Pro and Pro Max variants will also welcome a fourth spot into their already powerful camera array – the LiDAR Scanner. The LiDAR scanner is mostly used for calculating more accurate depth. The best of all, you can now shoot portrait photos in Night Mode by combining the power of the A14 Bionic chip and the LiDAR scanner.

What’s more, with night mode expanded to both the ultra-wide camera and the TrueDepth camera, both the premium models will be providing more versatile low-light photography actions. Also, iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max will enable you to shoot HDR video and Dolby Vision up to 60fps.

iPhone 12 Specifications and Hardware

The iPhone 12 series will be powered by Apple’s latest A14 chipset, the first-ever 5nm chipset in the world. Apple claimed that the new chipset see to a 40% increase in processing power compared to the A13 chipset. Apple also mentioned the A14 chip is the “fastest chip in a smartphone” which will be up for many tests in the future.

The iPhone 12 series will also be Apple’s first 5G iPhone ever. Although 5G technology in Singapore is still in its premature state, having a device that supports an upcoming technological advancement feature is nice to have. Apple also confirmed that all the iPhone 12 models will support 5G and the 5G technology here is using both the Sub-6 and mmWave 5G bands.

You will have a choice of 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB of storage space to choose from for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini. While the Pro models will start at 128GB, 256GB, and all the way to 512GB.

Weirdly enough, information about the battery capacity and battery life of the phones was not announced during the virtual event. However, Apple did mention that Fast-charging will bring the iPhone 12 from 0% battery to 50% in around 30 minutes. But you have to buy a separate 20W charger to access this speed.

Apple also made an improvement on its wireless charging functionality. Apple introduced a new accessory known as the MagSafe which is a magnet behind the phone that snaps into wireless charging pads. One good thing about the Magsafe is that it charges your device at 15W charging instead of the 7.5W charging when using Qi wireless.

The new iPhones will be ship with Apple’s latest software – iOS 14, pre-installed. iOS14 brings a lot of new feature to Apple users, including on-screen widgets, an app library, picture-in-picture, and other OS improvements.

iPhone 12 Verdict

iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro will be available in Apple Stores in around 23/10/2020. You can also preorder the phone through Apple Singapore’s website on Friday, 16/10/2020 to be among the first to get your hands on the new iPhone.

Since the iPhone has just been announced, it’s too early to give it a verdict. However, from what we saw on Apple’s announcement, the iPhone 12 is a viable phone to get your hands on since it’s future-proofed with 5G installed and the A14 chipset is more powerful than ever.

Further review will have to wait for the device to actually arrive and after testing it out real life.
