Black Shark – a gaming phone brand under Xiaomi, first emerged from the depth in 2018. During the time, the gaming mobile industry is mostly dominated by gaming tech giant: Asus with their ROG Phone series, and Razer with their Razer Phone series. With the demand for gaming phones increasing exponentially, Xiaomi decided to take the lead and sail into deep waters with their sights set on the two contenders and compete with a lower price tag and great internals.
Xiaomi Black Shark was the first generation gaming phone that Xiaomi sent into the ring. The phone does seem lackluster when it first came out, but it does cater to a wider audience with its relatively low price and high performance as compared to its competitors.
In 2020, Black Shark is standing on par with its competitors and has introduced the Black Shark 3 and Black Shark 3 Pro. The latest device is bigger, better, and cheaper compared to its competitors.
Introduced in early 2020, the new Black Shark 3 is big, as it should be, even in today’s standard. The screen is a 6.67-inch AMOLED 2K resolution display with a 90Hz screen refresh. There are no notches or punch holes on the screen where most mobile phones house their selfie camera instead, the device has a slender bezel on the top of the screen, a trait that is carried down from the Black Shark series. Under the hood, you will find a Snapdragon 865 chipset and a choice of either 8GB RAM with 128GB Storage or 12GB RAM with 256GB storage. With a Snapdragon865 chipset, the Black Shark is 5G compatible which makes it future proof as well. Surprisingly, it has a set of good cameras even though the devices leans heavily towards the gaming aesthetic. On the back, you get a triple camera setup which consists of a 64MP wide cam, a 13MP ultrawide cam, and a 5MP depth cam while the selfie camera is a single 20MP shooter which all-in-all is a pretty good setup for a gaming device. The battery is a 4720mAh battery pack which is big enough for a two days use but since its a gaming device, heavy gamers would see the battery last them at most a day. There is a choice of using a magnetic pin charger which allows you to charge from the back of the device where a magnetic pin receiver is located.
Xiaomi Black Shark 2 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset and is one of the cheapest devices during its prime to hold such power. It also got a few upgrades in specs compared to the first, Xiaomi Black Shark 2 features a dual front-firing speakers and an AMOLED display. For its price, it’s definitely a steal compared to that of the ROG and Razer devices. The Xiaomi Black Shark 2 once again features an aggressive gamer aesthetic and is now bigger than the first. It is now 6.4-inch as compared to the previous 6-inch, albeit, it is not as thick standing at 8.8 mm and weighs approximately 15g more than the first. Xiaomi Black Shark 2 still carries the same 400mAh battery but with a better camera setup. The dual-camera array now houses a 48MP wide camera and a 12MP telephoto camera. There’s also the 20MP wide selfie camera. The Shark Space 2.0 – Xiaomi Black Shark 2’s dedicated gaming mode, is also upgraded with more customizations and easier to access. For the price it is coming, you do get powerful internals but also coupled with some compromises which include the absence of an NFC. The Black Shark 2 is, however, cheaper than that of the Asus ROG 2 and Razer Phone 2.
When it first introduced, Xiaomi Black Shark represents a super bold design that literally screams “GAMING!”. The device is 9.3 mm thick and weighs 190g. But it does feature a 6-inch screen with minimal bezels which is give more rooms for gaming controls. The screen is a Full HD display and a 60Hz screen refresh – the only thing that makes the Xiaomi Black Shark seems lackluster because its competitors generally proves 120Hz to 144Hz screen refresh. It also carries a 4000mAh battery and a dual-camera setup on the main camera array consisting of a 12MP wide camera and a telephoto with 2X zoom capacity. All-in-all, it is a “first-gen” device that is dedicated to gaming and it just undercuts in many ways in other fields.
